Check Out The Defense Sound This Screaming Caterpillar Creates!

Despite lacking lungs this caterpillar knows how to producing sounds in order to thwart attack by predators.  Watch A 4th instar caterpillar of the Nessus Sphinx moth, A. floridensis, responds to a simulated predator attack in the video below.

During the first 29 seconds of the video, sound recordings are conducted with a regular camcorder microphone, and during the last 30 seconds sounds are amplified using a bat detector placed ~50 cm from the caterpillar. The bat detector converts high frequency sounds to low frequency sounds so that they are audible to humans. The video is played in real time.
