A pedestrian walkway at Miami International University collapsed yesterday injuring 10 people and killing 4. The $11 million bridge – which only opened days ago – collapsed onto the road at around 1:30pm local time leaving people and vehicles trapped underneath and on the bridge.
The walkway weighed 950 tons and was 174 feet long was said to be an feat of engineering designed to withstand hurricane-force winds. Built across the seven-lane Tamiami Trail, the walkway connected the FIU campus to the town of Sweetwater where the university estimates some 4,000 students live.
Here’s footage of the foot bridge before and after the tragic accident.
