Ahhh nothing like trying to cash in on a worldwide pandemic.
Personal protective equipment has officially turned into an extravagant luxury item, as French fashion house Louis Vuitton announced its version of a COVID-19 face covering.
Described by the company as “an eye-catching headpiece, both stylish and protective,” the Louis Vuitton face shield will come with gold studs and its signature LV monogrammed pattern.
The full-face covering has a photochromatic visor, which will turn darker when it comes in contact with sunlight. As an added bonus, the shield can also turn into a hat when the visor is flipped up.
The brand’s luxury take on PPE, which is reportedly being priced at $961, is set to go on sale in stores worldwide on Oct. 30, as part of Louis Vuitton’s upcoming 2021 Cruise Collection.
As fashion forward as the Louis Vuitton face shields might seem, however, they are still not as effective as face masks to help curb the spread of the new coronavirus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“At this time, it is not known what level of protection a face shield provides to people nearby from the spray of respiratory droplets from the wearer,” the agency says on its website. “There is currently not enough evidence to support the effectiveness of face shields for source control. Therefore, CDC does not currently recommend use of face shields as a substitute for masks.”
